Brazilian customs strike disrupts trade and sparks economic concerns
A nationwide strike by Brazilian customs officers has paralysed operations at ports and airports, significantly disrupting import and export processes. While essential shipments like perishables and medications are still being cleared, delays are mounting for other goods. The strike stems from grievances over unmet promises for salary adjustments and career restructuring.
At the Port of Santos, responsible for 30% of Brazil’s trade, the economic repercussions are alarming. Containers are piling up, jeopardising holiday goods and export operations. Many companies are resorting to costly air freight, while additional expenses for storage and equipment maintenance are expected to inflate consumer costs. As of now, government responses remain limited, leaving the resolution uncertain and the trade sector in limbo.
