Since the end of 2023, the major container shipping lines have predominantly routed their services around the Cape of Good Hope; however, individual vessels and services are now once again being routed through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. This return is taking place gradually and applies to specific voyages on a case-by-case basis.

For us as a freight forwarder, it is not always clear at the time of booking or before departure which route a particular vessel will actually take. Furthermore, shipping lines may change their routes at short notice depending on the security situation. This development may be particularly relevant to the existing insurance cover for your goods. For shipments through the Red Sea or the Suez Canal, special insurance provisions, exclusions or additional conditions may apply regarding cover for war and related risks.

We therefore recommend that you, particularly in the case of high-value consignments, take the precaution of checking whether there is sufficient insurance cover for your specific consignment and the route actually chosen. The terms and conditions of your respective cargo insurance policy are the sole determining factor in this regard.

We expressly do not wish to create any uncertainty regarding the current timetables with this notice, but rather to inform you at an early stage of a development that may be relevant to your shipments and their insurance cover. We regard this as part of our commercial due diligence and our responsibility towards our customers.
