Australian authorities are frequently checking weight of incoming containers
Australien port authorities in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Freemantle have increased the frequency of weighing import containers to check whether the VGM (Verified Gross Mass as per SOLAS regulations) submitted is correct. Single containers are therefore being picked and weighed in the port of arrival.
Any difference above +/- 1,000 kgs will result in a “Weight Amendment Fee” of appr. AUD 232.00 plus taxes and administrational charges. These will be billed to the exporting party who originally provided the VGM. To avoid these additional costs, continuous accuracy and correctness when issuing the VGM is very much recommended.
