Seaport handling brings container hauliers to the barricades
Up to four hours lost: the desolate handling situation at two Hamburg terminals is causing trucking companies a lot of frustration. The handling chaos at two Hamburg terminals is causing long traffic jams in the port. At HHLA’s Eurogate Container Terminal and Burchardkai in Hamburg, the bottlenecks in lorry handling have apparently worsened to such an extent that several trucking service providers have now announced price increases or surcharges for waiting times to their clients.
The Hamburg Freight Forwarders‘ Association had already denounced what it saw as the untenable conditions in the Hanseatic city’s seaport handling at a press conference at the annual members’ meeting at the end of April. Since then, the situation has worsened, according to Plaß, who is also President of the German Freight Forwarding and Logistics Association (DSLV). ‘I have never experienced anything like this in my 35 years in the industry.’
It is also to be feared that, in addition to the trucking sector, the railway operators will soon follow suit with similar surcharges or price increases for Hamburg and other ports.
