Rhine closes to barge traffic
Low water levels resulting from a lengthy heatwave across Europe have forced the closure of the Rhine to barge operations for the first time in four years.
The river’s closure couldn’t come at a worse time for European supply chains, which are already contending with out of tune vessel schedules, severe port congestion, driver shortages and the repercussions of the war in Ukraine.
