IMO climate delay sparks frustration across global shipping industry

The International Maritime Organization has postponed its decision on a global climate framework for shipping by one year, triggering disappointment and criticism across the sector. Meeting in London on Friday, a majority of member states voted to delay the adoption of the proposed Net Zero Framework, which would have introduced the first worldwide carbon pricing mechanism for an industrial sector and set a pathway to climate neutrality by 2050.

The postponement followed intense lobbying from the United States, Saudi Arabia and other oil-producing nations. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez expressed clear disappointment after the vote, urging delegates to reflect on the outcome. Environmental groups, including Germany’s NABU, called the result “bitter,” saying it squandered a chance to send a strong signal for climate action and multilateralism. Observers described the outcome as a setback for ambitious climate policy.
