Aden ranked world’s riskiest port in new global safety index
The Port of Aden in Yemen has been rated the world’s riskiest hub in a new port safety ranking launched by analytics firm Narrows. Ports in Central America — including Cuba and Nicaragua — and parts of the Middle East also feature at the lower end of the table. At the opposite end, Singapore’s Jurong Island oil terminal, Finland’s Port of Pori and the Port of Rotterdam occupy the top three positions, with Scandinavian and Canadian ports dominating the top 100. Not all major container hubs rank highly: Shanghai comes in at 15th, followed by Amsterdam at 56th, Algeciras at 59th, Tanjung Pelepas at 60th, Port Klang at 82nd and Ningbo at 83rd. The Port Risk Index covers 3,804 ports across four dimensions: physical accessibility, operational reliability, trade concentration and geopolitical stability. Accessibility covers channel depth and weather conditions; reliability measures dwell times and available labour; trade concentration assesses hinterland connectivity; and stability covers risks such as terrorist attacks and sanctions. The index was developed by analyst Adam Fysh, formerly a risk analyst at several UN agencies.
