Explosion in the port of Ningbo: Batteries a possible cause

The cargo in one of the containers may have played an important role in the explosion on a freighter in a Chinese harbour last Friday.

The explosion on the container ship ‘YM Mobility’ owned by Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming last Friday (local time) in the Chinese port of Ningbo occurred in a container carrying hazardous goods. This is the result of preliminary investigations, the shipping company announced. According to the Chinese authorities, there are indications that the container may have contained lithium-ion batteries. Special regulations apply to their transport. Meanwhile, the terminal where the explosion occurred has resumed work. Experts expect the disruption to timetables to and from Asia to intensify in the coming weeks as a result of the accident.
